Coil Bound Booklet printed by TPS Printing In San Diego

Coil Bound Book Printing

Books that open flat, stay open, and fold back on themselves.

If someone has to follow your book while doing something else with their hands, coil binding is usually the answer. The pages rotate a full 360 degrees, so the book folds back on itself and sits flat on a bench, a desk, or a counter without being held open.

That is why coil shows up on training manuals, workbooks, cookbooks, field guides, and anything that lives open on a surface rather than closed on a shelf.

How coil binding works

A continuous plastic spiral is threaded through a row of punched holes along the binding edge. Because the coil is a single continuous loop rather than a series of separate rings, the pages turn smoothly and keep turning past the point where most bindings stop.

The coil itself comes in a wide range of colors and sizes, so it can either disappear into the design or become part of it.

When coil is the right choice

  • The book will be used while the reader is doing something else
  • It needs to lay completely flat, or fold back on itself
  • It will be handled repeatedly rather than read once
  • You want the binding color to work with the cover
  • The page count is higher than saddle stitch comfortably handles

Coil is not the right choice if you need a printed spine, or if the book is going on a shelf where the title has to be readable from the side. Perfect binding does both of those things and coil does neither.

What people print coil bound

Training and operations manuals

Procedures someone follows at a workstation. The book stays open at the right page without a hand on it.

Workbooks and course materials

Anything written in. Coil folds back so the reader can write on a single page without fighting the binding.

Cookbooks and recipe collections

Open on a counter, splashed on, propped against something. Coil handles that better than any other binding.

Field and reference guides

Used standing up, outdoors, or one-handed. The fold-back matters more here than the shelf look.

Directories and schedules

Flipped through constantly, left open on a desk.

Frequently asked questions

What is coil binding?

Coil binding uses a continuous plastic spiral threaded through punched holes along the edge of the book. The coil holds the pages together while letting them rotate a full 360 degrees, so the book can be folded back on itself and laid flat on a surface.

Does a coil bound book lay flat?

Yes. That is the main reason people choose it. Pages open flat and rotate all the way around, which matters when someone needs both hands free while following the page.

What colors does the coil come in?

Black is the standard and the one most often used, but coils are available in many colors and sizes, so the binding can match your cover or stay neutral.

Can you add pages to a coil bound book later?

No. The coil is threaded through the punched holes during production and is not designed to be reopened. If your content changes regularly, let us know and we will talk through the options.

Is coil binding better than wire binding?

Neither is better outright. Coil uses a plastic spiral and comes in more colors and sizes. Wire-O uses a metal double loop and reads as more formal on a desk. Both lay flat and rotate 360 degrees. Choose on appearance and durability rather than function.

Can I print on the spine of a coil bound book?

No. A coil binding has no flat spine to print on. If you need a printed spine, perfect binding is the format that gives you one.

What size can a coil bound book be?

We produce coil bound books in a range of sizes, including custom sizes. Send us the finished size you need and we will confirm what works.
